What To Do With Worn-Out Clothes…?
Today is a sad, sad day. I finally decided to bid farewell of The Pants. You know, The Pants. The one pair of pants that always fit and feel comfortable even on a four-hour drive.
I purchased these pants at a T.J.Maxx at least six or seven years ago. They’re some brand name (I think it was Ralph Lauren) and they were around $20.
My daughter has hated these pants ever since she started paying attention to clothes. At times, I’ve been banned from wearing them. I agree, they have an “odd” color, but they are so comfortable!
Last winter, I noticed that they were starting to develop holes around the pockets. So I took them to our trusty dry cleaners for some mending. They looked at me kind of funny and said that it wouldn’t be pretty. I said I didn’t care. One more season saved.
Early this fall, I noticed that another hole was developing around the pockets. I decided not to care. However, then, just a few weeks ago, the fabric in the inner thigh area just gave up. It was completely worn out and two rather large holes quickly developed. As the air grew colder, I could sense that holey pants was not going to work for the winter. It was rather drafty, so to speak.
Hence, today I made the decision to take them to a fabric recycling bin. Well, I thought it was a fabric recycling bin. Turns out it’s for “good” clothes and shoes only. I noticed this only after we had already deposited said pants. Ooops.
This caused me to do a quick search online for fabric recycling. I found an article on Pays to Live Green talking about how to recycle fabric. However, most of it was DIY options, which doesn’t quite work for me (although, I would like to get a sewing machine!). It did mention one organization called PlanetAid that accepts worn-out fabrics, but they’re not in this part of the country.
It seems like recycling centers should add fabric to their list of things you can recycle. I’m sure it can be used. I’ll have to do some more digging here… I just can’t fathom throwing fabric in the trash. Let me know if you have any other ideas!
Regardless, now I’m without “fat pants” and I’m thinking I’m going to try to keep it that way.
